How to Share Personal Content on Instagram

“How personal is too personal when it comes to sharing on Instagram?” This is a common question among my clients and students, as well as entrepreneurs in general. Some common concerns I hear are things like “getting personal feels too vulnerable”, “it’s hard to know where to draw the line”, and “I’m not sure what the point of getting personal is”. So why SHOULD you get personal on Instagram? First off, it allows your audience to get to know you and relate to you. It boosts the know, like, and trust factor, and helps you remove your mask and open up the conversation with your target market.
Now that you know WHY you should break out of your shell on Instagram, it’s important to know where to draw the line. Before I post a personal piece of content to Instagram, I ask myself these questions:
  • Will this help my audience in some way? What is the point of sharing? Your audience should either feel motivated, inspired, educated or connected to you after reading your caption.
  • Is this content related to my business, products, or services?
    • Good Example: Oiler shares how implementing oils has helped with her fertility problems
    • Bad Example: Graphic designer shares intimate details about a recent breakup
    • My Example: I’ve been sharing my fear of going live, about past anxiety attacks, and my new-found love of IG lives because it’s a story that I want my audience to be inspired by
  • Will this content help my audience know, like, and trust me more?
  • Would I share this information in public with a stranger? Think about this scenario: Would you be willing to write this information on your forehead and walk around town with it there?

  • Share quotes, ideas, stories as they come
  • Leave blank spaces on your calendar for these posts
  • Write down ideas as they come, and sleep on them
